About the Item

This lead coupe with a dark patina, resting on an elegant tulip-shaped base, captures the eye with its balanced silhouette and its reliefs of feminine masks, mysteriously contemplative. Conceived by Sylva Bernt for the marble hall of the Château de Rambouillet, this object was born of the creative collaboration between the Italian artist and master ironworker Raymond Subes, between 1952 and 1954. Bernt, originally from Italy, settled in Paris in the early 1950s, where she built a remarkable career, notably alongside André Arbus, for whom she sculpted a wide variety of significant decorative elements destined for exceptional projects — from ocean liners to refined architectural villas. Without decorative excess or ostentation, this coupe embodies her style: restrained lines, discreet expression, sculpted poetry.
