'Deshima Island' Pattern Blue and White dish c1725, Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng Era

About the Item

Penciled and washed in blue with an European scene of figures, one leading a cow, on pontoons and small islands in a broad river, a city on the opposite back, the blue-washed rim with a hooked border, the reverse with evenly-spared prunus branches. The pattern appears to have originated in Dutch delft, of which the earliest dated example is of 1684. It is traditionally said to be a view of Scheveningen. From there it was copied in the late 17th/early 18th century in Japanese porcelain, which seems to have given rise to the idea that the view was of Deshima Island. For further discussion and illustration of the Japanese version, see J.Ayers, O. Imply, J. Mallet, Porcelain for Palaces 1650-1750. It is believed the ship was a Chinese merchant’s cargo on its way from Canton (Guangzhou) to Batavia when it caught fire and sank. The merchant had ordered the goods on board for Dutch traders, who had limited access to China and its ports. * Porcelain for the European Market The Ca Mau Cargo consisted of numerous types of porcelain, chinaware and blue and white wares, all designed for the European market. Blue and white ceramics recovered from the cargo appear decorated with the so-called ‘Scheveningen landscape’, also known as ‘Deshima décor’. This motif usually depicted a traditional Dutch fishing village, executed in Chinese style. Chinese wares with Western motives were extremely popular and made to order and were known as ‘China de commande’.
