About the Item

A 1960's Mexican "married metal" (metales casados) plate of Pre-Hispanic inspiration by silversmith E. Cabello. The round plate is decorated with a Mixtec style stepped fretwork. The plate is sealed on the back "E. CABELLO C.A. MEX". The "metales casados" technique of metalworking was first introduced by the Castillo dynasty of Taxco artisans during the 30's and 40's. As former William Spratling apprentices, the Castillos began forging her legacy as some of Mexico's finest silversmiths and metalworkers. The technique combines two or more different kinds of metal: gold, silver, copper, brass, alpaca, tumbaga or silver plate. Those combinations are manufactured by welding and heating the different metals following an established design. The combination of the metal's different colors and textures make an excellent decorative option for trays, bowls and other utilitarian objects. These technique requires a high level of different skills; the silversmith must be an exceptionally precise metal cutter. To join the metals between them seamlessly, he must master each metal's different melting points. The complexity of this welding work results in, as the Taxco natives say, "the marriage bond between metals".
