English 19th Century Turned Sycamore Bowl with Incised Rings

About the Item

This 19th-century English bowl is finely turned from sycamore and features a softly rounded profile with a subtly tapering base. Its proportions are particularly harmonious—measuring 15 inches in diameter and standing 6.25 inches high, the bowl offers a pleasing depth while retaining a low, wide form well suited to display or functional use. A pair of incised rings runs around the exterior below the rim, lending a restrained decorative detail that highlights the turning technique. The surface shows the warm, pale amber tone typical of sycamore, aged to a mellow patina with scattered tool marks and small abrasions consistent with its age and utility. The underside reveals a centered foot ring, adding stability and a sense of lift to the otherwise simple form. Whether placed on a console, filled with seasonal fruit, or left empty to showcase its form, this bowl evokes the understated craftsmanship of 19th-century English rural wares. A timeless object, both utilitarian and sculptural in its presence.
