About the Item

This is a large ironstone pottery Footed Punch Bowl in the rare Mogul chinoiserie people pattern produced by the Mason's factory at Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, during the late Georgian period, Circa 1818. This is a large and rare piece. Large Punch Bowls are hard to find , particularly in this fine Chinese people pattern. Large size bowls like this one are very often called Punch Bowls although they probably usually held fruit or served as a purely decorative use. The bowl is decorated in the Chinoiserie Mogul pattern, which tends to be a rarer pattern, showing a group of oriental (Chinese) figures in a garden pagoda setting. The pattern is very richly hand-painted, over-glaze in brilliant enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange, green, yellow and puce in varying shades, over a black transfer printed underglaze outline. This pattern is illustrated on various pieces on page 143 and with similar bowls on page 199 , in the standard Mason's text - Godden's Guide to Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares by Geoffrey Godden, published by The Antique Collectors' Club of the UK. The base has the large blue printed crown and banner mark, which is recorded as being probably the earliest printed factory mark, indicating a date of circa 1813-1820 (closer to 1813), making this bowl one of the earliest pieces of Mason's, as Ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period. Overall, a rare distinctive and very decorative piece of Masons Ironstone.

Georgian Spode Stone China Sauce Tureen in Ship Pattern 3067, circa 1810
By Spode
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a very good sauce tureen made of ironstone (Spode's Stone China) in the Ship Pattern, No 3067, produced by the English, Spode factory early in the 19th century, George 111rd Period. The piece is well potted with two side handles. The pattern is called the Ship pattern number 3067, the chinoiserie decoration being transfer printed under-glaze, then very carefully hand-painted in bold colored enamels with additional gold gilding over-glaze. As is usual with Spode ware the standard of hand painted detail is very high. A plate in this pattern is shown on page 54 of Steven Smith's book; "Spode and Copeland" published by Schiffer. The pattern is in the Chinese taste as produced by many of the English potteries of the time, to compete directly with the large import of Canton or Chinese Export porcelain from China. The piece has a mid brown edge similar to that often seen on Chinese plates. The piece is fully marked to the base, with the earlier Spode black printed Stone-China mark...
