About the Item

Cool and beautiful multifaceted Murano Glass ashtray by Flavio Poli. He was born in 1900 in Chioggia, Italy, Poli and received his formal training at the Istituto d'Arte di Venezia. In the late 1930s, he became the artistic director and principal designer of Barovier, Seguso and Ferro, a Venetian glassworks company, which later became Seguso Vetri d’Arte. Poli’s submerged glass pieces, which were made by layering transparent colors and textures, were later awarded the Italian Compasso d’Oro (Golden Compass) Industrial Design award. They were also exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Milan Triennale, and the Brussels World’s Fair. Poli died in 1984 in Venice, Italy. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Murano Glass Museum in Venice, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.
