About the Item

Mid-century decorative platter (circa 1960s) by Albert Thiry (1932-2009). A whitened glaze encircles a deeply engraved sunflower motif (with face) in brown and highlighted by forest green and mulberry coloured concentric circles. Rustic yet beautiful, the lip of the platter repeats the colour scheme of the inner circles. The underside base is an unglazed, earthy clay brown where the signature appears: 'Thiry'. The platter is delightfully Provencal with a touch of whimsy. This is the essence of its charm. Both visually stunning and very tactile, Thiry's creations continue to delight even as they increase in age. In good overall condition. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of the work will be provided. About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian. Dimensions: H 6 cm / 2.4" Dia 32 cm / 12.6"
