Pair of Johnny Mattsson Teak Bowls Sculptural Hand Carved Sweden 1950s

About the Item

Hand-carved sculptural teak bowls by Johnny Mattsson, hand-crafted in his workshop in Sweden in the late 1950s to early 1960s. • Teak, 20 cm tall and 12 cm wide, signed. • Teak 23 cm tall and 12.5 cm wide, signed and labelled. About the artist John (Johnny) Filip Mattsson was a sculptor, woodcrafter and glass artist born in 1906 in Gävle Sweden. Through his father he has been working with wood from an early age and opened his first workshop in 1941, where he made candle sticks, table lamps and simple everyday goods of wood. His breakthrough came in the early 1950s when after exhibiting at Gävle Museum in 1952, he gained recognition and made a strong impression on the art and design establishments. The daily newspaper in Stockholm wrote: „In pear wood, in teak, mahogany and old pine that he used from demolished buildings, he creates visions in wood of such sensitivity in the lines that one is captivated. Touching his bowls and dishes is a pleasure, for they almost flow into the hand that holds them. " He considered himself unaffected by time and said that he would have probably expressed himself in the same way whenever he lived.
