Allmoge hand-carved Ale Hen, origin: Scandinavia, circa 1800 An interesting custom in Scandinavia concerned the bride by her mother-in-law upon the return from the church. Before she dismounted from her horse she was given a small carved bowl called “the bride’s bowl.” After she had drained it, the bride was supposed to toss the bowl backward over the roof of the house. She could have three tries. If she failed to get it over it boded ill for her marriage. The danger could be somewhat allayed if, upon entering the house, the new bridegroom went immediately to the fireplace and made three slashes in the wooden horse head that surmounted the pole on which the pothooks hung. The specific purpose of this good luck rite was to protect the house from burning. The rooster, with his fiery plumage, was a symbol of fire demon and lighting, and figured prominently in the luck ceremonies of which there were many. Superstition long played a part in the decorative motifs in Scandinavia. As a rule, the carving used on the small household containers was the large-patterned, deeply cut carving of the late middle ages. Used on the underside of butter box lids, a patterned imprint on the butter, a fancy touch for a company table. All of the most attractive containers were brought out when there were guests in the house. Footed cheese and lefse stands, large wooden troughs or bowls with flat horizontal hands for soup and meat, carved ladles and spoons and fine candlesticks bedecked the table. And if the family owned a large fowl-shaped ale bowl in which to float small individual “ale-geese” they could be very proud. That, of course, had the place of honor.
