Antique Dutch Delft Earthenware Plate Poem Prussian Invasion, 18th Century

About the Item

Round, curved plate (‘pancake’) with flattened bottom and raised edge. Decor: in the middle, one below the other, the text: ‘God granted / through Prussia’s power / his right again / and established the Dutch salvation through good fortune / again and again / now that we are connected with England and Prussia / freedom always remains preserved and / Religion inviolate’. Border: tendril ornament. The poem refers to an event from the time of stadtholder Prince Willem V (1748-1806). The prince was increasingly cornered by the patriots during his reign. On June 28, 1787, his wife, Princess Wilhelmina of Prussia, was arrested by patriots at the Goejanverwellesluis. Her brother, King Frederick William of Prussia, came to the rescue and entered the Republic with an army of 20,000 men. He chased away the patriots, after which Prince William V was able to return as stadtholder. The poem on the board refers to the Act of Guarantee (1788), in which Prussia and England jointly guaranteed the stadtholder system. Antique 18th Century Dutch Delft or Samadet Green Faience Barber's Bowl
By Delft
Located in Bad Säckingen, DE
This exquisite 18th-century Dutch Delft or Samadet faience barber's bowl showcases a classic lobed shape with a notched rim, traditionally designed for shaving use. The piece is hand-painted in vibrant green with a central floral motif surrounded by delicate foliate designs, accentuated by a decorative border along the scalloped edge. The tin-glazed ceramic surface exhibits the characteristic craquelure and slight imperfections typical of early Delftware. Originally used in barbershops for lathering and rinsing during shaves, this historical faience bowl is now a highly collectible decorative object, perfect for display in a Delftware collection or as a charming accent in a period interior. A remarkable example of Dutch craftsmanship, this piece captures the elegance and functionality of antique Delftware.
