About the Item
A very fine George III Drinks Salver made in London in 1773 by Richard Rugg.
The Salver is of a good large size and stands on four well defined cast claw and ball feet. The main body has a shaped circular form and the raised rim is decorated with applied beading interspersed with foliate motifs. The centre is beautifully engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with tied ribbons above, and a crossed branch and floral spray cartouche below. The Armorial is that of the Massey family, impaling the Chapman family. Richard Rugg was a specialist Salver and Tray maker of fine quality. He had workshops in St. John's Square, Clerkenwell Green, when this piece was made. The Salver is in quite excellent condition and is very well marked on the reverse. This would have been used by the footman to serve drinks at a reception.
