About the Item

A Glorious Large Damascened Silver and Copper Dish, probably from Damascus in the early 20th century. The term "Damascene" originates from Damascus, the capital of Syria, which was historically renowned for its skilled metalwork. During the Islamic Golden Age (8th to 14th centuries), Damascus became a center of metalworking excellence. Artisans in Damascus developed techniques to create elaborate designs on metal objects, including plates, using a combination of engraving and inlaying with precious metals like gold and silver. Modern Damascene plates like this one can be found in museums and collections worldwide, showcasing the enduring appeal and craftsmanship of this art form. This damascene plate features wonderfully designed inlay artwork along the border and the inner parts of the plate in flowing almost checkered patterns. The center circular cartouche presents a Decalogue with the Ten Commandments inlaid in silver encircled by further silver inlays in a chain pattern. Crowning the tablets is an imperial crown flanked by laurel leaves with the words "Ten Commandments" written in Hebrew. On both sides of the top center are two picturesque biblical scenes one of the Binding of Isaac and the other of Moses entering Egypt. Beautiful Figures of Moses in flowing robes carrying his staff and Aaron garbed in high priestly clothing carrying incense in a thurible, are inlaid in silver and copper flanking the center decalogue. Underneath the Tablets is a large eagle with its wings spread atop a banner that has the messianic slogan written in Hebrew: " I will carry you (plural) on the wings of eagles and bring you (nation of Israel) toward me" inlaid in copper and silver. Center Cartouche is encircled by triangular pattern inlays bordered with undulating foliate motifs. The upper border of the plate has lovely floral scrolled borders and Arabic inscriptions inlaid into the borders.
