About the Item

This pair of creamware dessert dishes dates to the early 19th century. Made circa 1810, the dishes have beautiful decoration on their wide borders. The borders consist of three concentric bands, each of which is encircled by a thin red line. The innermost band features grape leaves and grapes on the vine painted in sepia. The middle band has an impressed basketweave design. Along the outer edge is an all-around series of arcades outlined in red. Dimensions: 7.5" diameter Condition: Excellent, with slight toning on the reverse (shown in the last image). Price: $430 Background of Creamware: Creamware is cream-colored, refined earthenware. It was created in the mid-1700s by the potters of Staffordshire, England. Foremost of the pioneers of creamware was Thomas Whieldon. He invented a wide variety of decorations for creamware. The young Josiah Wedgwood partnered with Thomas Whieldon from 1754 to 1759. When Wedgwood left to set up his own business, he immediately directed his efforts to develop creamware.
