About the Item

A hand-blown Murano glass ashtray crafted in the 1960s by Venetian maestro Archimede Seguso. Oval in form, the compact dish is made from vivid red glass and features the bullicante technique—rows of evenly spaced bubbles suspended within the glass, achieved through controlled air infusion during blowing. Measuring approximately 11 cm in depth, 8 cm wide and 2 cm high, this mid-century Italian ashtray was originally designed with a single indent to cradle a cigarette. The polished base shows only minor surface wear consistent with careful use. While conceived as an ashtray, its sculptural clarity and saturated colour lend it equal value as a Murano vide-poche or tabletop accent. A quietly expressive object from one of Murano’s most technically exacting glassmakers.

Murano Glass Shell Dish in Red, Attributed to Archimede Seguso, 1950s
By Archimede Seguso
Located in Glasgow, GB
A decorative Murano glass dish, attributed to Murano glass maestro Archimede Seguso. Handcrafted in Italy in the 1950s, this elegant dish takes the form of a scallop shell, with its bottom edges pinched inward to create the distinctive shape. Made from vibrant red Murano glass and seamlessly fused with a sheet of gold leaf—a signature technique in mid-century Murano glass design—this combination results in a rich, organic pattern. During the firing process, the stretching and forming of the molten glass produce a concentric pattern of gold flakes that radiate outward, echoing the delicate textures found in a natural scallop shell. Measuring 11 cm in width and length, with a height of 3.5 cm, this vintage Murano...
