About the Item

Plate Signed René Lalique . Gazelles model created on 21.11.1925. Model referenced in the catalog Raisonné by Felix Marcilhac page 295 No. 390. In perfect condition. Diameter: 29.5 cm Height: 4.5 cm Weight: 1.3 Kg René Lalique Born in 1860 in Aÿ in Champagne, René Lalique revealed himself to be among the greatest of his time, whether as a jeweler or master glassmaker. He marked the periods of Art Nouveau and Art Deco with his unique and recognizable style. René Lalique began an apprenticeship in 1876 with the jeweler Aucoc. After taking courses at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and spending two years in England, he set up as a chamber designer and supplied the greatest jewelers such as Jacta, Boucheron, Cartier, Gariod, etc. In 1885, he took over the workshop of the jeweler Jules Destapes and fully launched into his career as a jeweler. Woman, fauna, flora... The "3Fs" that sum up René Lalique's main sources of inspiration. The artist had a deep admiration for the female body. He also drew a lot of inspiration from nature, which he observed so much as a child during stays in Champagne with his maternal grandparents. René Lalique's avant-garde jewelry appealed to an intellectual elite. Among the most famous clients were the actress Sarah Bernhardt and the oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian. In 1900, René Lalique won an unparalleled triumph at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. It was the height of his career as a jeweler. But success also meant attempts at imitation, which did not please René Lalique. Glass had attracted René Lalique for some time already. In 1907, he met the perfumer François Coty. From then on, he created bottles for specific fragrances for him and many perfumers: the container now had a direct symbolic link with the content. In 1913, René Lalique bought the glassworks in Combs-la-Ville where he developed the mass production of his works in order to limit costs and allow as many people as possible to access his creations. In 1921, René Lalique decided to build a new factory in Wingen-sur-Moder. He chose the Northern Vosges because he knew he could find qualified glassmakers there and took advantage of financial incentives from the French government following the First World War. "La Verrerie d'Alsace" specialized more particularly in tableware. Many services were thus developed and marketed throughout the world. ECLECTIC DESIGNER René Lalique then distinguished himself in various decorative fields. His contribution to the Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in 1925, with in particular the fountain Les sources de France, is a demonstration of his architectural know-how. He is also remembered, in the 1920s, for the radiator caps he made for cars. An exceptional artist and savvy industrialist, René Lalique knew how to live fully in his time to develop his company. He died on May 1, 1945, leaving behind an artistic legacy and a name, which remain famous to this day.
