About the Item

A refined English box from the early 19th century, constructed in the Regency period from richly figured faux tortoiseshell with ivory colored stringing and fittings, and each elevated on compressed bun feet. The larger example, a serpentine-lidded tea caddy, is notable for its crisply chamfered corners, boldly curved lid, and inset escutcheon in silvered metal, shaped in the Gothic Revival taste. The interior features a central lift-out tortoiseshell lid topped with a turned knob, revealing a compartment likely intended for loose leaf tea. The inner lid and walls are fully lined in conforming tortoiseshell veneers, further demonstrating the maker’s high level of craftsmanship. The entire surface displays vibrant mottling and deep amber hues, characteristic of high-quality marine turtle shell (likely hawksbill) used during the period. The box is likely either a pen or cigar box. Measures: 6.125" w x 3.125" d x 2.5" h.
