About the Item

Vintage porcelain dresser or jewelry box features square form with sculptural lid, inspired by antique Biedermeier style boxes, with dark green floral decor with black outline and gold trims on both box and lid. The lid is decorated with one large floral motif in the center and four smaller ones in corners; the box itself has one small motif on each side, and one - on the bottom, in the center. Each small motif is unique, with no repetitions. The box is marked with Augarten's underglaze blue mark, the shield and crown with Wien inscription, used since 1924, overglaze hand-written black decor/model numbers, and overglaze red Made in Austria stamp, dating the piece to mid 20th century. This is a discontinued shape and decor combination, no longer available and not currently listed in Augarten catalogue. The Maria Theresa pattern is one of the great classics of the Augarten porcelain manufactory. The Empress created a Dutch flower garden at Schönbrunn, and the porcelain pattern is a tribute to her love of botany. The bouquets of magnificent roses and other garden flowers, based on models from around 1750, are executed in deep copper green, one of the most modern color inventions of Maria Theresa's time. The elegant, sculptural form, high quality craftsmanship, and colorful, highly detailed decoration will make the vase a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Transitional, Modern Country, Glam, Collected, or Contemporary. Augarten factory, Europe's second-oldest porcelain manufactory, began operations in Vienna in 1718. It faced many economic problems during it years of operation, but it was extremely successful artistically. Under pressure from large-scale industry, the Vienna Manufactory closed in 1864. The porcelain of the original Vienna manufactory is often referred to as Alt Wien ("Old Vienna"). The entire collection of models was taken into custody by the Museum of Art and Industry (today's MAK). Sixty years later, in 1923, the manufactory reopened under the name "Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten" as a public limited company at its new location in Augarten Palace, preserving the tradition of the former imperial manufactory and creating new designs. In the 1920s and 1930s, Wiener Werkstätte artists such as Josef Hoffmann, Michael Powolny, Ena Rottenberg, Wally Wieselthier, and Ida Schwetz-Lehmann created more than 200 different new forms and figures. Sculptors and artists, such as Albin Döbrich, Robert Ullmann, Viktor and Karin Sakellarios, among others, created decorative figures to be realized in porcelain.

By Haviland & Co.
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Up for your consideration is a hand painted and hand decorated small tureen by Haviland in the Fleurs Parisiennes pattern on Cannele blank, measuring 3.1" and 8.5" with 5.4" opening. The back-marks on the bottom are H&C*/Depose underglaze mark, dating back to 1887, and the circular Haviland Limoges decorator/overglaze mark (mark g, according to Haviland's Collectors International Foundation reference sheet) in brown (color indicates premium decor pieces on Haviland porcelain made in that period), dating back to 1879-1889. Cannele blank ("fluted"), influenced by traditional Japanese bowl shape called "kaki" or "chrysanthemum", was one of the new blanks created in 1880-1890s by Haviland's artists at the peak of Japonisme movement, after European artists and artisans become exposed to Japanese art. Cannele was hugely popular at the time and won the Grand Prix of 1889 Paris's World Fair. The Fleurs Parisiennes is one of the less common Haviland patterns...
