About the Item

Ilya Schor (1904-1961) was a renowned artist and artisan, known for his work in various mediums including painting, engraving, and metalwork. He was particularly celebrated for his contributions to Judaica, creating beautiful ritual objects and decorative items that blended traditional Jewish themes with modern artistic sensibilities. Born in Zloczow, Poland (now Zolochiv, Ukraine), Schor immigrated to the United States in 1941 to escape the Holocaust. He settled in New York, where he became a central figure in the American Jewish art scene. Influences: His work is deeply influenced by Eastern European Jewish traditions, which he skillfully blended with modernist art movements. This Box is round with a removable lid at the top and is hand carved, smoothed, stained, and treated to enhance its natural beauty. On the top cover, Schor painted traditional motifs with a joyous Chassidic figure playing violin, with birds hovering and resting on Foliage beside him. The size of the box is practical and functional intended to be used and enjoyed made for holding small personal items, or jewelry. Known for his meticulous attention to detail, Schor’s craftsmanship is evident in the precision and artistry of this box. His work reflects a deep understanding of both the material and the cultural context. Schor’s contributions to Judaica are highly regarded, and his pieces are sought after by collectors and institutions for their artistic and cultural significance. The artist's signature is on the top cover of the box.
