English Sunderland Pottery Pink Lustre Vanity Pot, Spring

About the Item

A transfer printed vanity or chemists pot, made by Grey’s Pottery, England, circa early 20th Century. A. E. Grey operated between 1912 – 1920, on Mayer Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. The transfer printed lid shows a scene titled,”Spring.” Three people in period dress share a picnic under a tree. A town can be seen in the distance. Hand painted pink splashed lustre decoration surrounds the central transfer image on the lid, and circles the outer surface of the base. Splashed lustre is also referred to as mottled or splatter lustre, and is characteristic of the late 19th, early 20th century Sunderland potteries in the north-east of England. The technique is often incorporated with a lithographic transfer monochrome print. The covered pot measures 4 inches in Diameter x 2 inches H. Overall, showing the expected wear associated with age and use.
