George IV Vinaigrette Made in Birmingham in 1823 by John Bettridge

About the Item

The vinaigrette is broad rectangular in form and is engraved on the cover with trellis work designs and stylized foliate motifs around a rectangular cartouche engraved with contemporary script initials. The base is engraved with a foliate spray and prick dot bands. The interior is finely gilded and the grille is pierced and engraved with pluming scrolls.  Measures: Length 1.45 inches, 3.63cm. Width 0.9 inches, 2.25cm.

An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare pair of antique George IV English sterling silver boxes; an addition to our 19th century silverware collection. These exceptional and rare antique George IV sterling silver boxes have a plain rectangular form. The surface of each silver box is plain and unembellished, with applied thread decoration to the lower rim. Each box is fitted with a plain hinged hallmarked cover, ornamented with further applied thread decoration to the upper rim. The upper plateaus of the covers are individually embellished with an impressive contemporary bright cut engraved crest: one bears out of a ducal coronet a wyvern below the motto 'Avi Numerantur Avorum' - The forefathers of our forefathers are numbered and to the other an eagle regardant with wings extended grasping an escutcheon charged with a lion's head, below the 'Virtute et Robore' - By Virtue and Strength.
