Joseph Holdcroft Majolica Ceramic Japanese Design Casket

About the Item

A rare and unusual antique English Aesthetic Movement majolica ceramic Japanese design casket by renowned makers Joseph Holdcroft and dating from the 1870’s. At the time there was a significant influence coming from Asia particularly from such acclaimed designers as Christopher Dresser. He had made numerous visits to Japan from 1862 and was a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement and brought an ‘Anglo-Japanese’ flavor to the designs being created in Britain with many notable producers being influenced by these. This casket is very typical of the Christopher Dresser influence. The square shaped ceramic casket stands raised on four bird and ball feet and is decorated in relief with a squirrel and flowering prunus to two sides and with a heron and flowering prunus to the alternate sides. The cover is molded in relief with two stylized panels one with a Japanese lady and the other with a moon shape on a tapestry ground, very typical of the styles being produced at the time. The casket is decorated in turquoise glazes and is impressed J HOLDCROFT to the base. In good presentable condition with customary crazing and a few glaze rubs. There are some areas where the glaze has not taken, particularly to the inner box and cover. There is also professional restoration to the protruding beaks of the four birds forming the feet. Provenance: acquired in the British art market.
