About the Item
A late Qing dynasty Chinese wooden rice measure, hand-carved and richly lacquered in red and black, with traces of gilt enhancing its decorative motifs. Octagonal in form, the bucket is fitted with a lift-off lid and sturdy crest handle pierced for carrying. Six panels decorate the exterior, each hand-carved with birds, flowers, and scrolling foliage, the details brought out in red lacquer against a dark ground.
Originally used in rural households as a vessel for storing and measuring rice or grain, this piece reflects both its utilitarian purpose and the artistry of traditional woodworking. The surface retains an aged patina, with wear and fading consistent with use and time.
Today, it serves equally well as a decorative accent, a storage container, or even as a distinctive cachepot for plants, lending character to both modern and traditional interiors. Its compact size makes it versatile — easy to display on a console, shelf, or tabletop while adding a touch of late Qing craftsmanship.
