About the Item

A pair of beautiful brass jars with amazing patina. Inside with glass inserts. The lid adorned with a knob in the shape of a lily (just like the famous 'Liljan' candle holders). Designed by Ivar Ålenius Björk for Ystad Metall, Sweden, 1930s. Exhibited at New York World’s Fair 1939 in a lily themed set. Great condition (they can easily be polished if you prefer them shiny). Stamped 'IÅB', 'MADE IN SWEDEN' and makers mark. Ivar Ålenius-Björk was a Swedish sculptor and designer born in Malmö in 1905. He was educated at the Skånska malarskolan in Malmö and the Technical School in Copenhagen. He has executed several public works in Malmö, including the sculpture "Monument for war-lost sailors", 1945. To a wider audience, Ålenius-Björk is primarily known for the many different objects he designed for Ystad Metall, which include vases, mirrors and candlesticks. His almost iconic candlestick "Liljan" was manufactured for a long time in brass, bronze and nickel silver by Ystad metall and has also been taken up in new production by Skultuna in recent years. The candlestick "Liljan" also got a real boost in popularity after it appeared in the TV series Mad Men. After "Liljan" drew attention there, the candlestick was sought after internationally by collectors and decorators. Ivar Ålenius-Björk passed away in 1978.
