Pinyonet or "Rice Grain" Marquetry Chest, Spain, 16th Century and Later

About the Item

chest. Wood, bone inlay, iron. Spain, possibly Catalan or Aragonese school, 16th century (with later restorations). Rectangular casket with a flat lid that closes at the front by means of a key with a bolt with a decorated shield that is decorated on the outside and inside of the lid with a series of geometric compositions made with bone inlaid of the type known as "pinyonet" (also known as "pinyonet"). called "wheat grain" or "rice grain"). In this type of marquetry, small rhomboid pieces of bone are used to form large compositions, usually delimited by boxwood fillets, and widely used in Catalonia and Aragon. The cover presents two compositions (one on each side) both starring a large circular element in which triangles, rhombuses, stars, etc. are used, and these same geometric shapes are grouped creating circles in the corners, other elements in the smaller sides and a band that borders the entire field. Also note the fillet that borders the lid and the fronts, in which a brown tone alternates with the white or light color of the bone, in pieces arranged diagonally. Three of the fronts present an outer band with geometric elements, another band on the inside with stars and a strip of geometric elements. The lid of the piece, on the sides of the chest, presents two equal bands: framed by these crosspieces with diagonal elements, which presents a decoration of simple vegetal and floral elements. The back has three geometric elements enhanced by a fine inlaid band. Also note the presence of decorated moldings on the lower edge of the piece. Compare, for example, with the casket dated from the 16th century found in the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid (inv. CE01131), whose exterior presents some details in common with the present piece. This same museum has a panel from the 16th century that has a heraldic shield with the quarters of the Habsburgs, Holy Land, Austria, Castilla, León, Aragón and Granada (inv. CE20890); the composition around this shield is similar in certain details to that of the lid of this chest. The stars on the four sides can also be compared with those on some of the drawers of the wastebasket or arquimesa dated between 1576 and 1625 at the González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Sumptuary Arts (Valencia). · Size: 60x40x24cm. Portapaz. Silver in its color and gilded. Century XVI. Portapaz made of silver that has a handle (decorated with delicate plant motifs similar to those of the pilasters) and a female and a male bust at the bottom, as well as other architectural elements on the back, and, on the front, an architectural composition classicist basement (with busts flanking a flower and a cross), two pilasters (vegetal decoration and capital recalling the composite order) with entablature (flowers flanking an angel's head; moldings), and a semicircular arch finish with elements veined in relief under cross and flanked by two architectural motifs in the upper part. This composition frames and enhances a gilt silver relief where you can see the Lament or Cry over the Body of Christ, with the Virgin holding the head of Jesus, Saint John at her side, the Magdalene and other characters, a cross following the group and a landscape background with houses and plant elements. This architectural structure mentioned is similar to the one present in other 16th century portapaces, such as that of the Magdalena de Dos Hermanas parish (Hernando de Ballesteros el Mozo, around 1575); or that of the Galaroza parish (same author and date); or that of the portapaz of San Miguel de Jerez de los Caballeros (in some details); etc. As for the relief, it is possible to clearly see a strong Italian influence, and the similarity between it and important pieces such as the Portapaz known as “de Cisneros by Juan de Burgos (1493-1497; MuseoCatedralicio de Alcalá de Henares), as well as in paintings and reliefs. Also noteworthy are both the male and female busts in the lower area and the Maltese cross (or Saint John's) that appears in this area.
