About the Item
Regency Amboyna Writing Slope with Ebony, Silver, and Abalone Inlay
England, circa 1820–1835
A well-crafted early 19th-century writing slope veneered in richly figured amboyna, the surface displaying a fine swirling grain. The lid is decorated with a central inlaid motif of a quill and letter, composed of ebony, abalone, silver stringing, and painted detail. A border of matching inlay surrounds the lid, with coordinating detail to the front edge.
The silver diamond-form escutcheon to the front frames the keyhole. The lid opens to reveal a fitted writing slope lined in purple velvet, with compartments for inkwells and pens. The interior is constructed from a light, fine-grained wood—likely satinwood or sycamore—with a warm golden tone. The base is lined in green baize, likely replaced.
Condition:
Good overall condition. Minor veneer losses to corners and light surface wear consistent with age. Small restoration to painted elements of the cartouche. Original writing surface shows wear and fraying along the central hinge. Interior woodwork clean and well coloured. Lock present but untested with key.
Dimensions:
33 cm wide × 22 cm deep × 13 cm high
Provenance:
Acquired from an antiques dealer in Northamptonshire in the early 2000s; previously part of a private collection in Yorkshire.
