About the Item

prototype unique piece, never sold. Salvador DALI (1904-1989) & E.G.I France VANITY CASE, rectangular, sheathed in brown leatherette with Daligramme motifs, revealing a removable mirror, two pockets and a supple leather bottle-holder on a camel leatherette background. Brown leather box handle and reinforcements. Double lock with keys. Signed ‘Design by Salvador Dalí’ on a piece of leather inside. Height 20 cm; Width 36 cm; Depth 20 cm Bibliography: - Jour de France, Spécial Haute-Couture et Prêt-à-porter Hiver, November 1971, p. 119. - Elle Magazine, no. 1354, 1 December 1971, p. 17. If Salvador Dalí's activity had to be summed up in one word, we could choose protean. Every day, his multi-media artistic creations seem to seem a little more complete. If we thought we already knew the painter, sculptor, film-maker and author, we are now confronted with the fashion designer. This exceptional collection by Salvador Dalí is the result of a Daliesque story like no other. At the turn of the 1970s, Salvador Dalí and his right-hand man and confidant John Henri Moore decided to tackle the fashion and leather goods market. To do so, they joined forces with E.G.I France (Editions Graphiques Internationales) to create a collection of various items of luggage, leather goods and small leather goods intended to be marketed to as many people as possible. Production was launched, the best craftsmen in Paris were selected and the products were displayed in the busy windows of Parisian and Belgian shops, including Lancel. In 1971, the first advertising campaigns were published and the sample produced by EGI France -which we are presenting today- was exhibited. It promoted the exhibition in its December 1971 issue, with the headline ‘Taking Dalí on a trip is quite extraordinary. And possible (...)’. Except that the adventure came to an abrupt end in the few months following this advertising campaign. ‘We're calling it quits’, says a simple telegram sent to the managers of EGI France. Why was this collaboration nipped in the bud? Why did a promising campaign have to come to an end? We don't know.
