About the Item
An elegant early 20th century tobacco jar attributed to Erhard & Söhne, the renowned German makers celebrated for their refined Art Nouveau brasswork. The cylindrical body is made of dark-stained wood and richly decorated with brass inlay depicting stylized figures engaged in a tug-of-war, a dynamic and rhythmic design inspired by classical friezes and athletic motifs. The base and lid are further embellished with geometric Jugendstil patterns, and the lid features a sinuous brass handle.
The interior is tinned, typical for high-quality tobacco jars of the period, ensuring preservation and freshness. This combination of wood, brass, and tin demonstrates the exquisite craftsmanship and material harmony for which Erhard & Söhne were famous around 1900–1910.
In excellent condition with only minimal signs of age. A fine example of German Secessionist design blending classical inspiration with modern form.
