About the Item

Rare Jean Dunand Art Deco Cigarette Case, Circa 1930 – Bronze, Coquille d’Œuf, and Lacquer This exceptional Art Deco Jean Dunand cigarette case, circa 1930, is a stunning example of the artist’s mastery of lacquerware and coquille d’œuf (eggshell inlay). The exterior showcases a rich red mahogany lacquer, meticulously embedded with tiny coquille d’œuf fragments, creating an exquisite pattern. The case’s bronze construction adds weight to the piece, while the interior remains exceptionally clean with a beautifully darkened textural design. The piece functions perfectly, with a smooth, precise mechanism, and is stamped "Jean Dunand" on the clasp. Overall in very good condition. The lacquered surfaces present with very minor scattered losses concentrated to the edges, consistent with gentle use and not visually distracting. The bronze surfaces present with very minor scratches, light tarnish and traces of oxidation to the interior. Jean Dunand (1877–1942) was one of the most influential figures in the Art Deco movement, known for his pioneering work in lacquerware and metalwork. His mastery of traditional Japanese lacquer techniques, introduced to him by master Seizo Sugawara, allowed him to create some of the most sought-after decorative objects of the period, including vases, boxes, panels, furniture, and cigarette cases. Dunand’s work is highly collectible and prized by connoisseurs, often commanding significant interest at auction and in major design collections. This rare Art Deco cigarette case exemplifies the timeless elegance of Dunand’s lacquer technique, seamlessly blending modernist geometric abstraction with refined craftsmanship. His work was favored by the elite of the early 20th century and continues to be a cornerstone of luxury Art Deco design. Collectors of historical design, fine lacquerware, and Jean Dunand's masterpieces will appreciate the rarity and significance of this exceptional piece.
