About the Item

An exceptional pair of Empire period candelabra, dating from the early 19th century, circa 1810. This highly refined pair is emblematic of the height of the Empire style, embodying the elegance and neoclassical grandeur characteristic of the Napoleonic era. Each candelabrum is finely crafted in gilt bronze and patinated bronze, resting on a red griotte marble base adorned with gilded garlands and laurel wreaths. The base is topped with an urn decorated with stylized foliage, from which rises a classically draped female figure triumphantly holding a five-light branched candlestick, richly ornamented with scrolls, acanthus leaves, and floral motifs. The contrast between the patinated bronze and the fire-gilded bronze creates a striking visual balance and a level of sophistication reminiscent of the grand imperial interiors of the period. The Empire style, inspired by the art and architecture of ancient Rome, was intended to glorify the power and stability of Napoleon’s regime. These candelabra are a perfect testament to that ambition, blending imperial symbolism, exceptional craftsmanship, and neoclassical aesthetic. Possibly created in the Parisian workshops of renowned bronziers such as Pierre-Philippe Thomire or André-Antoine Ravrio, these works exhibit an outstanding quality of casting and gilding.
