pair of French 19th century Bronze and Ormolu candelabras, signed Barbedienne

About the Item

A high quality and large scale pair of French 19th century Renaissance st. Rouge Griotte Marble, patinated Bronze and Ormolu candelabras, signed F. Barbedienne. Each nine arm candelabra is raised by a square Rouge Griotte Marble base with Ormolu scrolled supports in a lion paw design amidst scrolled acanthus leaves. Above is an Ormolu laurel band below the fluted marble pedestals. The patinated Bronze and Gilt bodies display a socle pedestal at the bottom with a fine berried laurel band and an elegant reeded design. At the center are fine scenes of maidens holding urns and birds in their hands with scrolled handles at each side. Above is the first level of scrolled arms decorated with acanthus leaves and circular cabochons, while the upper level of scrolled arms supports the stunning swaging garlands below. Each arm has a fluted candle cup above the Ormolu saucer. All original sensational gilt throughout. Ferdinand Barbedienne (10 January 1810 – 21 March 1892) Barbadienne was a French metalworker and manufacturer, who was well known as a bronze founder. Between 1850 and 1854 his firm , Barbedienne,, provided furnishings in the Renaissance Revival style for the Hôtel de Ville, Paris. They received numerous medals at the International Exhibitions, including medals in three different classes at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London.
