About the Item

A beautifully and high quality pair of French 19th century Louis XV st. Cloisonné and Ormolu candelabras, signed F. Barbedienne. Each six arm candelabra is raised by a square Ormolu pedestal with Greek Key designs, laurel vines, and foliate central reserves on all four sides. The pedestal is supported on four scrolling acanthus leaf feet. Above is the lively and colorful body which is decorated with Greek Key designs along its base, amber and white floral designs, vivant green lily pads and acanthus leaves, multi colored curving figures, and scrolling vines throughout. Wrapped around the neck of each candelabra is a dentil patterned Ormolu band. The top cap above is designed with Ormolu acanthus leaves gently draping over the edge and leads to the mottled fut that has a circular socle shaped central reserve which holds the five Ormolu scrolled arms. Each scrolled Ormolu arm is tastefully decorated with acanthus leaves and draping foliate designs below the spiral fluted candle cups. The mottled fut extends upwards with additional draping acanthus leaves and an additional candle cup which holds an eternal flame finial. Cloisonné is the technique of creating designs on metal vessels with colored glass paste within enclosures made of copper or bronze wires, which have been bent or hammered into the desired pattern.
