About the Item

This pair of spectacular palatial and very large antique French Sevres style candelabras dates to the late 1800s and is executed in the Louis XV style. Each piece is mounted in silvered bronze and set atop a tall, ovoid porcelain body finished in a deep cobalt blue glaze. The porcelain elements are unmarked, but the mounts are consistent with the style and technique employed by Parisian bronziers during the late 19th century. The mounts feature classical ornamentation including lion masks and pierced cartouches, with each piece supporting a multi-branch candelabrum issuing from the top. There are no foundry marks visible, though the modeling and chasing of the mounts indicate fine Parisian workshop production. Each candelabra rises from an openwork rocaille-form base with voluted scrolls and acanthus foliage, surmounted by a tall porcelain Sevres style vase encased at the shoulder and foot in pierced silvered bronze mounts. The upper sections feature fourteen candle arms in total, radiating in tiers from a central bouquet of twisted stems and applied leaves, with additional floral mounts worked into the branches. The candle sockets are shaped as fluted cups with petal-edged bobeches. The mounts at the shoulder are pierced and adorned with three-dimensional satyr masks framed by scrolls and palmettes. The extensive use of foliage, floral motifs, and asymmetric scrollwork is consistent with the Rococo revival taste. These candelabras reflect the elaborate production methods of 19th-century French decorative art workshops, particularly those active in Paris under the influence of the Louis XV revival. The silvered bronze mounts were likely cast using the lost-wax method and chased by hand, with the surfaces then silver-plated for a bright finish. The porcelain bodies are consistent with kiln-fired hard-paste examples from Sèvres-influenced workshops, though no specific manufacturer's mark is present. Large candelabras such as these were intended for grand interiors and often produced in matched pairs during this period to flank mantels or console tables.

Pair of Large Louis XV Style Gilt-Bronze and Samson Porcelain Candelabra
By Samson & Cie
Located in London, GB
A pair of large Louis XV style gilt-bronze and Samson porcelain candelabra French, Late 19th century Measures: Height 68cm, width 54cm, depth 36cm Crafted with great artistry and skill by the Samson porcelain manufactory in late nineteenth century France, these exceptional candelabra feature superb full-length porcelain subjects set within elaborate gilt-bronze lighting branches. Made in the Louis XV style, each pair, symmetrical to each other in design, consists of five-lighting branches, a mount for the porcelain, and elegantly sculpted bases. The porcelain figures are that of a man and woman playing musical instruments, wistfully gazing towards each other while they stroll and play; he plays a variation on the bagpipes, probably the French cabrette, while she plays a large guitar-like stringed instrument. They stand 68cm in height and bear the Samson mark to the underside. Beautiful pieces, the porcelain figures of which can stand separately, they are wonderful examples of French antique...
