About the Item

An 18th Century German Pewter Hanukkah Lamp crafted by Johann Georg Balthasar Weilbach, active from 1786 to 1819 in Nördlingen, Bavaria. The lamp belongs to a specific group characterized by sidepieces that extend into legs, an oil reservoir placed directly on the bench not on a shelf as is common with most bench lamps, and a spout with a hanging pewter pail for collecting excess oil. Lamp features engraved, traced, pierced, and cast decorations, notably a flaming heart symbolizing love, and two birds holding festive garlands. This iconography suggests a theme of marriage or celebration. These characteristics are typical of pewter lamps from Nördlingen, dating from around 1780 to the early 19th century. The lamp is marked with "Hintze Zinngiesser VI 710," indicating the pewterer responsible for its creation. Similar Pieces: Similar lamps by Weilbach can be found in collections at The Jewish Museum (F 5076) and the Heimatmuseum in Oettingen (part of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, no. 3/121). This pewter lamp is not only a testament to the craftsmanship of Johann Georg Balthasar Weilbach but also provides insights into the artistic traditions of Nördlingen in Bavaria during the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Its iconography and design reflect the social customs and symbolic language of the time, particularly in relation to marriage and celebration. Literature taken from "Five Centuries of Hanukkah Lamps from the Jewish Museum"
