France 19th Century Measures h only candlesticks 65 x p 27 cm; h with lampshade 86 cm This pair of important two lights candlesticks was made in the 19th century, in France, on the style of the great sculptor Clodion. In the other candlestick one observes the satyr Pan...

Two Bordeaux Faience and Gilt Bronze Oil Lamps, Attributed to Vieillard & Cie
By Jules Viellard
Located in London, GB
These elegant faience (tin-glazed earthenware) oil lamps were most likely crafted by the prestigious Jules Vieillard & Cie company (1845-1895). The firm was based in Bordeaux, which had been a centre for pottery production since the early 18th century. Vieillard & Cie developed from an earlier pottery factory, established by an Irishman named David Johnson. From 1845, the company was directed by Jules Vielliard, who worked in partnership with his two sons, Albert and Charles. The firm was only active for 50 years, so the possibility these oil lamps were created by Vieillard & Cie makes them particularly special. The lamps are stamped ‘V C’. The lamps feature baluster-form faience bodies, which are raised off the ground by circular, pierced gilt bronze (ormolu) bases. The faience bodies are intricately decorated with quatrefoils, teardrop profiles, medallions, and bands. These variously contain yellow and red geometric patterns, and navy, green, red and white floral motifs, set against light blue grounds. This beautiful tin-glazed decoration appears to be inspired by Eastern designs. The lamp bodies are fitted with gilt bronze (ormolu) collars, wick-raiser knobs, and burners, which are covered with tall glass lamp...
