19th Century Pair of French Charles X Gilt & Patinated Bronze Candlesticks
About the Item
PAIR OF GILT AND PATINATED CHARLES X CANDLESTICKS
Raised on animal paws circa first half of the 19th century
ref. 407RYG09P
13 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W x 4 1/2" D
A lovely pair of candlesticks from the Charles X period, they are an eternal design that developed after the Empire period and seem equally relevant in period and modern interiors alike. Raised on trapezoidal bases with the three animal paws set at each point, they have a draped skirting of grapes with grape leaves along with other foliage and flowers over the knees. A small sphere with vertical reeding echoes the more defined reeding of the tapered column, both being in a patinated and polished bronze. Each raises a single candle well with a drip ring of the same bas-relief rosette found encircling the patinated candle well.
Of a remarkably good quality, they are finely cast in bronze and intricately chiseled and hammered to articulate the details throughout. Note the animal paws, which retain the very fine lined textures evoking a sense of fur in each of the toes.
Condition:
Overall in good condition with a well-preserved patina; rubbing to the base edges; gilding with some wear and tarnish as expected. At one point drilled for electricity, this since reversed. Some ever-so-slight misalignment of elements so that neither is perfectly straight. Cleaned and polished, ready to place.

FINE PAIR OF NEOCLASSICAL ORMOLU-MOUNTED ROUGE MARBLE TABLE LAMPS
France, probably Paris, circa third quarter of the 19th century
Item # 404LBP26Q
A magnificent pair of Neoclassical vases converted into lamps, they are designed loosely after the influential vases of Antiquity known as the Medici and Borhese Vases. Those Kraters were executed in marble and have been widely considered the finest and most well-conceived vases of Antiquity. They have been frequently copied and have been the inspiration for many decorative arts, including the present pair.
The original vases feature bas-relief scenes in the Medici vase of a seated Iphigenia beneath a statue of Diana surrounded by Achilles, Ulysses and Agamemnon and in the Borghese vase a scene of drunk Silenius, Dionysus wearing his animal skin garment and Ariadne all together accompanied by a procession of revellers.
The present example departs from antiquity, focusing only on the Bacchic revellers and have repeated this motif across the field of the vase. They carry in their outstretched arms wreathes and long drapes of their garments, several carrying in hand the Thrysus. The chorus of figures is loosely reminiscent to the Borghese Dancers, also known as the Dancing Hours, executed in bas relief in marble...
