Derby Porcelain Candlesticks decorated with Hen and Chicks

About the Item

Derby Porcelain Candlesticks decorated with Hen and Chicks, William Duesbury & Co., Circa 1765 The Derby porcelain candlesticks are slightly raised on four feet with scroll work around the front with a molded pink sea shell in the front. The flat front is modeled on one with a sitting hen and her five chicks and on the other two cocks facing each other. Above is a three-dimensional bocage of different colored flowers. The top is surmounted by a blue candle holder. The back has a loop handle surmounted by a pink flower. Marks: Four patch marks to base. Dimensions: 9 1/2 inches high x 6 inches wide x 5 1/2 inches deep Height of stick with two cockerels: 9 3/4 inches Exhibition: The figure with the two cockerels has a paper label on the base reading "Exhibited Art Treasures Exhibition 1967" with the National Antique and Art Dealers Association of America name around the outside of the label. These are possibly related to the Aesop's fable, The Cock & the Jewel- A Cock was busily scratching and scraping about to find something to eat for himself and his family, when he happened to turn up a precious jewel that had been lost by its owner. "Aha!" said the Cock. "No doubt you are very costly and he who lost you would give a great deal to find you. But as for me, I would choose a single grain of barleycorn before all the jewels in the world." Precious things are without value to those who cannot prize them. Pair of vintage candlesticks probably produced between the 60s and 70s. We do not know whether it is a Chinoiserie, therefore candlesticks made in Europe but in an Oriental style, or whether it is a Chinese production, despite the uncertain origin, they remain splendid decorative elements. These candlesticks have a quadrangular base and candle holder in silver metal, polished by us with a specific product. The peculiarity is in the stems of these vintage candlesticks, made with the Cloisonné technique, an artistic enamel decoration that involves a design made of thin threads or strips or small metal partitions...
