Gilt bronze putti candlesticks in the style of Henri Picard, 19th
About the Item
This pair of 19th-century gilt and chiseled bronze candlesticks is a true testament to the refined and decorative art of the period. The bases of the candlesticks feature twisting crocodiles, an exotic touch that contrasts beautifully with the delicate figures of cherubs placed above. These cherubs, also known as Amours, are depicted seated on the backs of the crocodiles, combining two symbolic elements: power and innocence. In their hands, the cherubs hold cornucopias filled with finely detailed vines and grape clusters. These same clusters adorn the candleholders, adding to the opulence of the piece.
Though unsigned, the candlesticks are in the style of Henri Picard, a renowned 19th-century bronze maker and gilder. Picard was celebrated for the exceptional quality of his gilt bronze work, with some of his pieces gracing the apartments of Napoleon III in the Palais du Louvre. These candlesticks, in remarkable condition, exemplify the artisanal craftsmanship and elegance sought after by the bourgeoisie of the Second Empire.
These decorative pieces would perfectly complement a prestigious collection, evoking the richness and exuberance of 19th-century interiors.
