About the Item
Pair of vintage two-armed brass candlesticks was designed by Gunner Ander and manufactured for Ystad Metall in Sweden. The organically shaped, rounded arms with abstract leaf elements hold the sconces with bobeches (or drip pans); they are mounted on minimal round base. Clean lines and minimalist, sculptural form of the candlesticks are supported by the choice of the classic metal.
The candle holders are marked with the manufacturer logo and "Made in Sweden" stamped on the bottoms; they are in very good vintage condition with beautiful, age-appropriate patina. They can be used as ether as a shelf or fireplace mantle decor, or as a coffee table accent decoration; they will make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Organic Modern, Mid Century Modern, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Glam, Scandinavian Minimalist, Collected, or Contemporary.
Gunnar Ander (1908-1976) was a Swedish designer and architect. Ander was born in Helsingborg, Sweden and studied at the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Ander is known for his designs at Lindshammars Glassworks, where he designed and developed art and utilitarian glass from 1949 to 1976. At Lindshammar, Gunnar Ander mainly created decorative glass objects such as vases, candlesticks and bowls, often in colored glass with slender, stylized shapes. His designs are characterized by simplicity, balance and a playful but sophisticated idiom. He also created innovative designs for Ystad Metall in iron and glass or other metals, such as brass and iron. Gunnar Anders works are highly appreciated in Swedish retro design and stand as a strong example of Scandinavian design with timeless appeal; his work is on display in multiple museums in Sweden.
Ystad–Metall was founded in 1919 in the south of Sweden; it operated until 1969. It created stylistically pure objects of tin, brass, iron, bronze, and silver, designed by well-known Swedish designers like Ivar Ålenius-Björk, Carl-Einar Borgström, and Gunnar Ander. Ander's work with Ystad Metall helped to establish the company as one of Sweden's leading lighting manufacturers in the mid-twentieth century.

Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
