Pair Of 19th Century Lignum Vitae Treen Candlesticks

About the Item

A Very Attractive Pair Of Early 19th Century Antique Treen, Lignum Vitae Candlesticks, Of Good Rich Colour And Patina, Having Bulbous Sockets Over Broadening Baluster Stems, Terminating On Stepped Disc Bases. Antique treen candlesticks are wooden candlesticks, traditionally made from turned wood that can date from throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Often they would be made from whatever wood was to hand, oak, walnut or pine, but lignum vitae was a little more special, and of course therefore more expensive to purchase, due to its exceptional hardness and durability, alongside its decorative features. This design of treen candlesticks can be found throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries and this pair can be dated to around 1830 based on the design features and wear. The term "treen" refers to anything made from wood, specifically handmade functional items like candlesticks, bowls, and spoons. These candlesticks were often used for domestic purposes, such as lighting tables or shelves. As with all items which we offer for sale this pair of antique candlesticks have been inspected and attended to by our specialist antique restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure they are ready for immediate placement within the home.
