Tiffany Japonesque Applied Sterling Silver Chamberstick with Bugs

About the Item

Japonesque Arts & Crafts applied sterling silver chamberstick. Made by Tiffany & Co. in New York, ca 1879. Deep bowl and twisted-loop handle with tendril tail. Urn socket with wide and flat detachable bobeche on central raised spiral. Beatles on socket and handle (a bug cap), and butterfly heightened with gilding in bowl. Also, a gilt leaf (literally, gold leaf). Jokey & buggy. Honeycomb hand hammering and stylistically integrated script monogram. Fully marked including pattern no. 5884 (first produced in 1879), director’s letter M (1873-91), and phrase “Sterling-Silver”. Weight: 9.5 troy ounces.
