Antique French Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock c.1890

This is a superb antique French gilt bronze mantel clock with Bleu Celeste porcelain panels in the Sevres manner, circa 1860 in date. The case crowned with two cherubs holding laurels one holding a mask emblematic of theatre, flanking an oval Bleu Celeste porcelain panel of the playwright Molière . The base decorated with ormolu flowers is raised on turned feet and inset with Sevres plaques decorated with cherubs. The circular dial has Roman and Arabic numerals and the clock has an 8 day striking movement complete with count wheel strike and bell, stamped with Miroy Freres...

This is a lovely antique French ormolu, gilt bronze, mantel clock with Bleu Celeste Sevres porcelain panels, by the renowned maker, Raingo Freres, Paris, circa 1850 in date. The clock features a beautifully cast pair of ormolu cherubs surmounted with game, to include fish, boar and pheasant, above a circular enamel dial with Arabic and Roman numerals. The dial is flanked by porcelain panels with gilt highlights, depicting playful cherubs. The clock has an 8 day striking movement and is complete with pendulum, bell and key. This incredible clock is a must have for any collector of ornamental and decorative pieces. Condition: The clock is in really excellent working condition the movement having been cleaned and serviced by our horologist, and the ormolu case having been polished, please see photos for confirmation. This mantel clock is a wonderful piece of French Neoclassical design. It is an unusual and very beautiful item, which has been expertly crafted from gilt bronze (ormolu). The clock will add elegance and sophistication to a mantelpiece. The clock features a table-form body which is topped by a classical urn. The urn is crowned by a pomegranate finial and mounted with twin handles in the shape of rams’ heads with rings in their mouths. The urn is decorated with twisted and cabled fluting, a belt draped with foliate swags, panelled motifs and a ropework band. The urn stands on a table-shaped body which is surmounted by outward-pointing pinecone finials and laurel branches. The stepped tabletop has scalloped corners and is decorated with an egg-and-dart and leaf-and-dart band, as well as a central Green Man mask.
