About the Item

A very fine French 19th century brass eight day striking and repeating carriage clock by Drocourt, Paris and retailed by Edward White, London Drocourt was one of the finest manufacturers of carriage clocks in the later part of the 19th century. The company was founded by Jean-Baptiste-Charles Drocourt in 1851 and their clocks were renowned for exceptional quality, accuracy, and exquisite craftsmanship. Edward White was a highly regarded English maker of carriage clocks. He was John Dent’s foreman and continued his illustrious career to become a maker and retailer of fine carriage clocks in London. John Dent was the chronometer maker to the Admiralty and maker of the great clock at Westminster Palace, Big Ben. The polished brass corniche case is fully glazed with thick bevelled glass, a rear hinged door and oval upper viewing aperture and hinged carry handle to the top. The white enamel Roman dial signed ‘E. White. Paris’ is framed in gilt and has blued steel hands. The clock has a twin barrels movement with original silvered platform lever escapement, striking and repeating the hours on a rear-mounted blued steel gong, the back plate stamped for Drocourt. The clock's movement is an eight-day striking and repeating mechanism, meaning that the clock will run for eight days before it needs to be wound. The clock also strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell, producing a beautiful sound that is typical of French carriage clocks. The clock also has a repeating mechanism that can be activated by pushing a button on the top of the clock. This mechanism will cause the clock to repeat the last hour it struck. These types of carriage clocks were not only functional but also served as status symbols, representing the wealth and refinement of their owners. They were a symbol of wealth and refinement during the 19th century, and they continue to be sought after by collectors and enthusiasts today. Their beauty, functionality, and history make them a valuable addition to any collection or home.

Condition:
Repaired: The movement has been fully cleaned and overhauled and is running well and keeping good time. The case is bright and clean with only minor marks, surface scratches and light tarnishing. Glazed panels are complete with only a very fine hairline crack across the lower rear corner of the right side panel. There is no damage to the enamel dial.

A superb high quality eight-day striking and repeating carriage clock, signed on the enamel dial PERREGAUX AU LOCLE, circa 1870. The superb engraved gilt gorge brass case has facetted glass panels to all sides so that the movement is almost entirely visible. The top has a large rectangular window which allows full view of the original silvered platform escapement.
