About the Item

Antique Swedish grandfather clock Sweden Wood set Around 1780 Dimensions: H x W x D: 213 x 60 x 26 cm Description: Antique grandfather clock, so-called Mora clock. The clock case stands on a curved cut-out base, the lower part of which is carved out in a typical 18th century manner. The door of the clock case has a large viewing window and is decorated with carved and gilded friezes and flowers. On the left and right outside there is a window to look into the movement. The head is also designed to match. The highlight at the top is a carved and stuccoed mythical sea creature. The weight-driven eight-day movement is also of particularly high quality. It strikes one bell every quarter of an hour and two other bells every hour. The attractive dial with Arabic numerals has an off-centre date display at the top and the signature: Joh. Lindström below the three winding holes. The brass hands are hand-sawn and hand-filed. All the discs are old and original. Points of interest: Lindström was obviously one of the upper class clockmakers and used Danish movements as opposed to the relatively primitive Moras, which were assembled by farmers in the winter months (French Comtoise clocks were also assembled by farmers in the winter). Mora clocks have steel plates and pillars as the basic component of the movements. The Danish movements are made of brass and use steel only for axles and levers. Condition: Very good condition. The clock case has been repainted in the found colour. The gilding has also been renewed. The movement has been cleaned and overhauled. Comparable objects can be found in the reference book: Heuer/Maurice - Europäische Pendeluhren p. 250.
