About the Item

19th-century Egyptian revival clock, circa 1860s, made by the renowned French clock and watchmaker Le Roy and Fils, who were granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria in 1864—the only foreign clock maker to hold a British royal warrant. The clock features a black and red marble case mounted with bronze sphinxes. Le Roy et Fils was a French company specializing in clocks and watches. It was founded in 1785 by Basile Charles Le Roy (1765–1839), who later passed it on to his son, Charles-Louis Le Roy. Le Roy et Fils became successful and survived the turmoil of the French Revolution. The company served as a clock maker to Napoleon I, his sister Princess Pauline, Mme Mère, and the King of Westphalia. After the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy, it held a warrant for the Duke of Bourbon. A shop was opened in London in 1854 at 296 Regent Street under the name Le Roy and Son, which was later changed to Le Roy and Fils. A second shop was opened in London in 1885 at New Bond Street. Le Roy et Fils held a British Royal Warrant to Queen Victoria and was the only foreign clock maker to hold this distinction. The clock is in good antique condition, with minor signs of age and use on the case, as expected. The clock movement is in good working condition. Dimensions: High: 38 cm Width: 30 cm Depth: 15.5 cm

A French Egyptian Revival mantel clock, dating to the mid-19th century, is made of polished black marble and patinated bronze.
