Allegorical French Louis Philippe Clock of Clio the Greek Muse of History

About the Item

A French Louis Philippe allegorical gilt bronze and marble mantle clock depicting Clio, The Greek Muse of History. The standing figure of a gilded Clio is shown leaning against the clock plinth reading a book with one hand, the other hand bent to support her head. The figure and plinth sit upon a stepped red griotte marble base decorated with a large gilded band; the whole on large winged lion’s paw feet. The white enamel dial with a gilded bezel has roman numerals, below the dial is a large decorative gilded lyre. The original silk-string suspension movement rings the hours and half’s on a bell. The backplate is signed, and the mainspring is dated 1842.
