About the Item

A beautiful original antique French clock, modelled in the Baroque style in gilt bronze. It is of architectural form with an applied motif of flowers, scrolls and cornucopia. Scrolling brackets are mounted to the sides and an urn with mythical creatures sits on the top. Above the dial is a goddess mask. The dial is also gilt bronze with 12 individual enamel cartouches and finely cut blued steel hands. The bezel is fitted with convex glass. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen running, for example if the clock were to be placed in front of a mirror. The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. Dial is also good with just some slightly chipping next to the winding holes. Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required. This impressive and large cartel clock has a circular, arabesque chased, brass dial with Roman numerals on enamelled cartouches, with engraved seconds and steel hands. An eighteenth-century version of this clock by ‘Mynuel A Paris’ (Maitre 1720) is illustrated by Tardy in ‘La Pendule Francaise’, 1ere partie, p. 141. Initially conceived by C. Cressent, the design was further refined by A.C. Boulle before being embraced by J.J. de Saint-Germain. The earliest examples of this distinctive style bear the signature of clockmaker J. III Thuret. Only a handful of identical specimens of this model are known to exist. One such identical piece resides in the Frick Collection in New York, originating from the Dalva Brothers...
