Antique Jade and Silvered Bronze Mantel Clock Retailed by Yamanaka & Co.

About the Item

Our lovely portico style mantel clock, retailed by Yamanaka & Company Ltd. in New York in the early 20th century, features a silverplate frame flanked by two finely carved foo lions and movement by the Chelsea Clock Company. 23 in wide, 11 1/2 in tall and 7 1/2 inches deep. Underside with the impressed mark YAMANAKA / BRONZE. Movement marked CHELSEA CLOCK CO. BOSTON Yamanaka & Company was one of the most prolific and admired dealers of Asian art in Europe and United States in the late nineteenth century early twentieth century. A family business that was initially based in Osaka, Japan, it became a shareholding corporation and a global leader in selling Asian art mainly to a Western clientele. In 1894, the first gallery outside of Japan opened in New York City, with more branches following in Boston, Chicago, London, and Beijing, among other locations. Their prestigious clientele included the Rockefellers, Ernest Fenollosa, Charles Lang Freer, and Osvald Sirén, among many others. A broad array of objects sourced and retailed by the firm have entered the collections of numerous museums across the globe, including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Rijksmuseum, Seattle Art Museum, Freer Gallery of Art, among others.
