About the Item

George II Burr Walnut Bracket / Mantel Clock by John Smallwood, Macclesfield, circa 1750 A distinguished George II period bracket / mantel clock, English, circa 1750, signed by John Smallwood of Macclesfield, featuring a fine fusee movement and richly figured walnut case. The clock is housed in a beautifully patinated burr walnut case, richly grained with feather-banded herringbone inlay to the front door, surmounted by a domed top with brass carrying handle and four urn finials. The case rests on small bun feet and retains much of its original finish. The dial is particularly elegant, with a silvered chapter ring engraved with Roman numerals, gilt spandrels to the corners, and a matted center with aperture. The backplate is lavishly engraved with scrolling foliate designs and the maker’s name. The 8-day single fusee movement is fronted by a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, finely cast gilt spandrels, and a matted dial center with aperture. The backplate is exquisitely engraved with scrolling foliate decoration and bears the maker’s signature: “John Smallwood, Macclesfield.”
