About the Item

A magnificent gilt-bronze mantel clock of monumental form, richly cast and finely chased in the Rococo-revival style. The case is surmounted by a celestial globe above a pierced floral basket crest, flanked by scrolling acanthus leaves. The shoulders feature busts of classical maidens in relief, framed by abundant rocaille ornament and floral festoons. The circular enamel dial with Roman numerals is finely painted and signed “Marquis à Paris”. Ornate pierced gilt hands are set within a lavish bezel. The interior brass movement is engraved “Charenton-Saint-Maurice / 373 / 1033”, identifying its workshop origin. The case rests on bold scrolled paw feet adorned with acanthus. The exuberant case design reflects the Second Empire taste for richly ornamented furnishings, drawing inspiration from Louis XV Rococo models. • The celestial globe finial symbolizes astronomy and universal time, suggesting an allegorical theme of science and knowledge. • The high quality of the gilding and the depth of the chasing identify this as a luxury commission intended for a sophisticated Parisian clientele. ⸻ Maker • The dial signature, “Marquis à Paris”, indicates the retailer or horloger established in Paris during the mid-19th century. • The movement inscription “Charenton-Saint-Maurice” references a horological workshop located just outside Paris, known for supplying mechanisms to Parisian clockmakers. • The dual signatures confirm the collaboration between a Paris retailer and an expert movement workshop, a common practice in French clockmaking of the era.
