About the Item

A very large and impressive 19th century Empire style gilt and patinated bronze malachite mantel clock depicting 'Psyche Crowning Cupid.' Psyche crowning Cupid with a flower wreath, both semi-nude, standing on a rectangular base with animal paws feet. The couple stands on each side of the clock gazing into each other’s eyes. Cupid and Psyche, of course, being the tale of a human and a god falling madly in love with each other. Psyche, a woman so pretty that many considered her a goddess and many began to worship her. The story focuses on the journey of love and the trials of couple who worked hard for their marriage The twin train striking movement with outside count wheel, the backplate impressed AL 23 and with JAPY FRERES BASTILLE. Measures: Height: 41", width 32", depth: 15.
